Choosing when to visit Fort George depends on what you want to see. The grounds stay open all year. However, the full historic experience runs from spring through autumn.
What is the best time of year to visit?
Visit between early May and late October for the complete site experience.
During these months, Parks Canada operates the full historic program. You will see costumed interpreters representing the 78th Highlanders and Royal Artillery. All indoor exhibits, including the Army Museum, are fully open.
What time of day should I go?
Arrive before 11:45 AM to watch the daily Noon Gun firing.
The cannon fires at precisely 12:00 PM every day. Arriving early gives you time to find a good viewing spot on the ramparts. Morning visits also help you secure one of the 80 on-site parking spaces before they fill up.

Are the Halifax Citadel grounds open in winter?
Yes, the outdoor grounds are open year-round.
Between November and April, the indoor exhibits and guided programs close. You can still walk around the exterior walls and Dry Ditch. This provides quiet, panoramic views of Halifax Harbour and downtown.
How does summer compare to winter?
Summer provides full access, while winter is limited to the outdoors.
If you visit in the off-season, dress warmly. Citadel Hill is elevated 225 feet above sea level and gets very cold winds.

When is the fort least crowded?
September and October offer fewer crowds with full programming.
The site draws nearly 200,000 visitors annually. Peak summer brings heavy traffic to the downtown core. Visiting in early autumn provides cooler weather and much easier access to the West Ditch parking area.
How does weather affect my visit?
Citadel Hill is exposed and frequently windy, requiring extra layers.
There is minimal shade on the parade square and ramparts. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker in the summer. Rain can disrupt outdoor military drills, but you can explore the Cavalier Building during showers.
